Do the trains run in bad weather?

The trains run in all kinds of weather. During a severe weather advisory we suggest calling our office beforehand at 800-707-3530.

Are the trains heated?

We do have heat in some of our coaches. During the cooler weather, if you tend to be on the chilly side, you may want to bring a blanket.

Do we serve food?

On our regular scheduled trips, we do have a snack bar on board serving items from our local food co-op.  We have a variety of box lunch choices in the area or you can bring a picnic lunch on board.  Some of our specials may have food included.  This will be noted under the ride description.

Can we bring our dog?

We will be allowing small dogs on our train this year, however, please be advised that by bringing your dog on the train you are taking full responsibility to keep your dog leashed throughout the trip and respect our other passengers.  We reserve the right to refuse a dog for travel. 

Is the train handicap accessible?

We have a wheelchair lift at the boarding location in White River Junction Vermont.  We do not have lifts at some of our remote charter locations, the Montshire Museum, or the Charlotte and Shelburne pick up locations for the fireworks. Some of our trains, because of their vintage nature, do not accommodate wide wheel chairs. Most door opening are approximately 25" wide.  Please call for specifications if required. Wheel chair occupants must be able to transfer.

Is the train appropriate for small children?

The train ride is great for children of all ages. We do request that all children are accompanied by an adult during the entire trip. As with all moving vehicles, heads and hands are to stay inside the vehicle at all times. Please take the necessary precautions during extreme hot weather with infants, elderly and dogs on board. Our coaches are not air conditioned.

Is there a one way rate?

No one way rates are offered with the exception of those traveling with a bicycle. One way fares are offered at all locations if you are planning to take the train in one direction and then ride your bicycle, walk or kayak on the return trip.

Do you offer discounts?

A military discount of $1.00 per person per card. None of These discounts are not available for online ticketing and will only be offered at the ticket window the day of travel.

Is the engine a steam engine?

Our regular engines are not steam.  We use diesel engines to pull our trains.

Are reservations required?

During the summer season, unless you are a large group, reservations are not necessary. However, we do recommend during our busy season that you make reservations for any size group.

How can we pay for our train ride?

We take Master Card, Visa, and Discover for online ticketing and in addition we accept cash at the ticket window and on board the train.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes, you can purchase gifts certificates for tickets and for the gift shop in increments of $25.00.

Are there bathrooms on the train?

There are bathrooms on the trains and at the stations in White River Junction.

Is the train narrated?

We do have an historical narration on the trains that will describe the highlights of the trips.

Is alcohol allowed on board?

We were able to successfully change the Vermont Liquor Laws in 2010 to allow us to hold wine and micro-brew beer tastings on the train.  We are limited to the ones we do hold so we offer these throughout the fall.  Please check our schedule and look for Wine Wednesdays and Thirty Thursdays for those events.  You will learn about beer and wine making in Vermont and try a variety of Vermont products.  Some of our special events include full bar service.

Do you offer dinner trains?

We offer many specialty trains including some dinner events. Check our web site for special details.

Can we bring food on board?

Yes, you may bring food on board. We allow eating on board in our tables cars.  These are available on a first come, first serve basis.

Is there parking and is there a charge?

Parking is free and there is ample parking spaces available. Burlington may require paid parking down by the waterfront. There is ample parking for buses and RV's.  Please ask upon arrival at the station if you have a large vehicle and we will assist you in finding a parking location.

Are there restaurants within walking distance?

All locations offer great eating opportunities within walking distance. 

When do the ticket offices open?

Our ticket offices are open in the summer approximately one hour before each trip. If other ticket arrangements are required, please call 800- 707-3530 for assistance.

What is your cancellation policy?

You can cancel seven days prior to any trip and receive a full refund. Groups are required to have a $100.00 non-refundable deposit unless trip is cancelled 45 days prior to travel.

When should we arrive to purchase tickets and ride the train?

It is recommended to be at the station approximately one half hour before the train departs. You may want to leave yourself extra time in the fall. There is no assigned seating on the train. We do reserve coaches for a large group and if we have the room will do this upon request for smaller groups as well.
